Topic: “Wild Orchids: Living Jewels of Myanmar and Conservation Needs”
This presentation will focus on that Myanmar is home to over 800 wild orchid species, many found nowhere else on Earth. These orchids are not only ecologically significant and valuable as a genetic resource but also hold cultural importance and potential for sustainable livelihoods. However, they now face serious threats of overcollection and illegal trade, online sale risks, climate change impacts like habitat shifts and altered flowering times, and habitat loss from deforestation. Together, these pressures are driving many wild orchids toward extinction, making urgent action essential to protect Myanmar’s natural treasure.
